Westwing SBTI- Targets validation

Munich, 23rd November 2023 – Westwing, Europe’s No.1 in Beautiful Living e-Commerce, is proud to announce the official validation of its carbon reduction targets by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). This recognition underscores Westwing’s commitment to championing sustainable practices and fostering positive change within its industry.

The Science Based Targets initiative empowers organizations to set scientifically sound emissions reduction targets, aligning with the latest climate science and contributing to the global goal of limiting warming to 1.5°C as outlined in the Paris Agreement. By achieving these targets, Westwing is dedicated to reducing its carbon footprint, mitigating the impacts of climate change, and ensuring a resilient and responsible supply chain.

Westwing’s Two-Pronged Targets:

Scope 1 and 2 Emissions Reduction:

  • Target: Achieve a 75% reduction in Scope 1 & 2 GHG Emissions by 2030 (from Westwing`s 2022 baseline), covering both direct emissions from operations (Scope 1) and indirect emissions from purchased energy sources (Scope 2)

  • Approach: Implementation of measures, including the adoption of alternative energy sources and enhanced energy efficiency for Westwing`s warehouses and vehicle fleet.

Supplier Engagement:

  • Target: Westwing commits that 80% of its suppliers by spend covering purchased goods and services, and upstream transportation and distribution will have science-based targets by 2027.

  • Approach: Development of a concrete supplier engagement strategy with a view to enabling our suppliers to set emission reduction targets, including through training and capacity building activities.

Andreas Hoerning, CEO of Westwing, emphasizes, “The official validation of our targets is a pivotal step in our sustainability journey, reaffirming our commitment to reducing our carbon footprint and addressing the wider impact of our value chain. As we acknowledge there’s more work ahead, this validation sets us on a clear path to create a meaningful and lasting impact.”

Westwing initiated this process in 2021, calculating its full Scope 1, 2, and 3 CO2 emissions last year. Looking ahead, the company plans to publish its Climate Transition Plan next year, offering comprehensive insights into its action plan to achieve these targets. Westwing remains committed to transparent annual reporting on progress.
