Munich, 19th April 2022. Westwing is devastated about the situation in the Ukraine and to see all the harm happening to innocent people. Westwing and its team members stand in solidarity with the Ukrainian people. Even if the company is not actively operating in the Ukraine, Westwing has strong ties, solely by the fact that Ukrainians are the third largest nationality in the Westwing Group. Like many, Westwing is doing what they can to not only support its Ukrainian team members in whatever ways possible but also on a larger scale.

“It is still surreal to witness the attack in the Ukraine. Our hearts and thoughts are with all our Ukrainian colleagues, their families, friends and neighbors in these terrible times. We want to use our sources to support wherever possible on different levels,” said Miriam Rabung, VP HR & Organisation at Westwing.

Westwing builds the support of the Ukrainian people on three pillars.

  • Product donations to furnish Ukrainian refugee homes

  • Employee support and further actions

  • Direct monetary donations to Caritas International

Product donations to furnish Ukrainian refugee homes

In the last weeks, Westwing supported the furnishing of homes for Ukrainian refugees by providing furniture and other items from the company’s warehouses. Together with LEG Immobilien SE, a listed housing company headquartered in Düsseldorf, Westwing is furnishing 24 apartments in Dortmund, Herne, Monheim and Wilhelmshaven in North Rhine-Westphalia for around 90 Ukrainian refugees. “It is great to cooperate with Westwing on this project. Although it obviously cannot make up for the loss of their homes, our cooperation will allow us to quickly provide Ukraine refugees with furnished apartments,” said Dr. Volker Wiegel, COO of LEG Immobilien SE.

In addition Westwing cooperates with the Munich based Ukrainian influencer Viky Rader to furnish 10 homes for approximately 45 refugees, mothers and their children, in Munich. Westwing donated over 400 products from tables, sofas and chairs to lamps, mirrors and cushions to make the homes for Ukrainian families a welcoming place to recover. Moreover, the team members in Poland support with product donations from the Polish warehouses on site.

Employee support and further actions

Every team member at Westwing wants to support. Therefore they have collected hundreds of items, from medicine to everyday supplies, at the headquarter’s donation point that will be brought to the Ukrainian church in Munich or for colleagues who are hosting refugees in their homes. In addition Ukrainian engineer team members initiated and are currently implementing a new donation feature in the check-out process to make monetary donations for the customers easier. To support refugees in Germany and other countries where Westwing is operating, the company has registered on various job portals for hiring refugees, cooperating with Imagine Foundation e.V., Ukrainians Abroad and is part of Boston Consulting Group’s program “Imagine Ukraine”, giving Ukrainians arriving in Europe a new perspective on the European job market.
Westwing also allows and encourages its team members in volunteering to support Ukrainian refugees arriving in Munich during the working hours. Local task forces in Westwing’s international offices and warehouses support Ukrainian refugees with actions adapted to the respective countries.

Direct donations of EUR 100,000 to Caritas International to provide emergency assistance

To provide immediate support, Westwing donated EUR 100,000 to Caritas International to help the crisis area as well as the neighboring countries with the arrival of refugees.

Westwing truly thinks that it is important to help where they can and to inspire others that every small contribution can make the situation better for a single person in that moment. It is great to see how everybody supports and sticks together to actively contribute as help is still needed. Westwing continues to closely monitor the tragic situation and will adapt its measures as needed.
