Munich, 27th September 2022. Global use of raw materials has more than tripled in the last 50 years and the demand for natural resources has increased significantly. In its sustainability strategy, Westwing has committed to using sustainable materials responsibly-sourced and being as resource efficient as possible along its supply chain. In this context, the company has set ambitious targets - among others, the use of more than 90% certified sustainable wood by 2026 for the products of the Westwing Collection.

The FSC Forest Week

Forests play a key role in combating climate change and preserving biodiversity. The Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®) offers sustainable forest management solutions trusted by countless NGOs, businesses and consumers worldwide. FSC forest management certification confirms that the forest is being managed in a way that preserves biological diversity and benefits the lives of local people and workers, while ensuring it sustains economic viability. FSC-certified forests are managed to strict environmental, social and economic standards. In its effort to source and provide to its customers products made out of sustainable wood Westwing has become an FSC promotional license holder (N003477). As such Westwing is delighted to support the FSC Forest Week 2022 - a global consumer awareness-raising campaign. The campaign has set itself the task of working with more than 1,000 global companies to document their joint successes in sustainable forestry and to present them worldwide. Under this year’s theme, “Choose Forests - Choose FSC,” it aims to illustrate how the choice of goods originating from environmentally friendly practices can help create resilient forests for the future and ensure their protection. The campaign also aims to inspire responsible and sustainable actions that benefit our environment for future generations.

“Awareness and understanding of FSC certifications need to grow so that more people understand how they can contribute to sustainable forests. It can be so easy to make a positive difference when consumers are encouraged to choose more sustainable products,” emphasizes FSC International Chief Markets Officer Jeremy Harrison.

As a supporting partner of the FSC campaign, Westwing contributes to the FSC’s goal of “Forests Forever - For All” and uses the initiative to sensitize customers to the topic of sustainable forest management.

Westwing’s contribution

Westwing is proud to support the sustainable management of forests and to participate in this campaign to communicate to its customers the FSC’s many efforts and remarkable commitment to forests.

“We are excited to participate at the FSC Forest Week and raise awareness about sustainable forestry. Offering FSC-certified products is part of our commitment to work with the most sustainable materials, and provides us and our customers with the certainty that forests and the people that rely on them are respected,” says Erasmia Kitou, Head of Sustainability

Increasing the amount of sustainable materials in its own products and also offering sustainable products from its other partners are top priorities for Westwing. The company is continuously working to develop the criteria and guidelines for material sourcing beyond compliance with legal requirements. Besides being an FSC promotional license holder, the eCommerce company is also certified under the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) and is a member of the Better Cotton Initiative (BCI), for sourcing sustainable cotton. These initiatives have made it possible to continuously expand the sustainable product offering under the Westwing Collection, which now includes textiles, furniture, decorative items and certain lighting products. They have also made it possible for Westwing to highlight to its customers third party products offered that have similar sustainable attributes.
